The City Wall
I think I'll be sad if the city ever expands around the Academy of Industry. I quite like having the city wall running immediately behind my house. Often I go there late at night to sit and watch the stars.
It's oddly peaceful.
Stories
Hmm.
A few of my friends use their blogs to post stories that they write for New Babbage. This seems like a good idea. Although everything is available on the New Babbage site, it often takes some digging to find everything on a certain storyline, and the site search returns results in a weird order. Not chronological.
*raises an eyebrow at the site admins*
So I'm thinking about putting mine here. For posterity. Or easy reference. Mostly for my own sake though, so I don't lose them. I kinda have a tendency to do that. My hard drives are in a shameful tangle.

At home with Kaylee and Kenna
I was going to go check out a trampoline someone had set up in North Fells, but sometimes all you want to do is spend time with your friends. Kenna and Kaylee kept me company at home tonight. Here we are, upstairs in my study. Kenna lying on the floor, me dancing, and Kaylee waiting to catch me if I happened to trip over Kenna.
Fortunately, we all survived.

Hellpumpkin
A new sim was just added to New Babbage, going by the name of North Fells. It's meant to serve as our new sandbox, and Babbagers celebrated Sandbox Week with a wee bit of zombie mayhem. Just to make things interesting, an immortal, flesh-eating pumpkin was added to the mix. Since it couldn't be killed, Mr. Arnold devised a way to trap it in a cage. Quite ingenious, actually.
In this manner I was able to get a good look.

Masquerade!
How dreadfully silly is it to dress an avatar in a costume? Isn't that a bit redundant?
Hm.
Anyway, Saturday was the big New Babbage masquerade ball, held by Breezy Carver at her magnificent Piermont Landing in the Wheatstone Waterways sim. Bookworm Hienrichs, the event photographer, captured this snapshot of my costume:
Afterward, my friend Kenna and I explored a sim called Mythopoeia. It's simply breathtaking - the most incredible texturing work I think I've seen in SL so far.
Tonight was a Weird Al Yankovic party at the Radio Riel Clarendon Lab in the New Babbage sim. I dressed in a dirndl skirt and Pippy Longstocking pigtails, but didn't get a snapshot. Maybe Ms. Book will come through on this one too.

And now for something less serious...
TANK GIRL!
Tonight was Fallout Friday at the regular Foot Tappin' Friday event at Brunel Hall. Vic played music from the Fallout games, and other songs from those eras. There was a post-apocolyptic theme, and since I've never played the game, I decided to dress as my favorite post-apoc character.
And I got a bazooka.

A Serious Post (dun-dun-duhhhhn)
Since I began keeping this journal, my entries have been what I would refer to as "light." Happy, happy. Junie skippety yay. There is a bit more to Junie though, and this is some of what has been churning beneath the surface.
Sometimes when I read the work of other writers whose work I admire (and there are many!), my next thought is a selfish one. What comes to mind is a desire to be part of the creation, and a split-second later, to at least be able to produce such work myself. Which is impossible. The futility of comparing myself to others isn't lost on me, but it's a lifelong habit. I don't expect to shed it anytime soon.
When I was younger I took to heart the advice that I would "find my voice" someday, and I've spent a good long time waiting. Maybe I've found it, only to realize that I have many voices. It depends on who I am, where I'm at, what has been happening on the day I set pen to paper (or thought to screen, as the case may be). There's a voice that rises to the top though, which I suppose I should accept as "my" voice, at least for the most part.
Wonderful. I have a voice. What I haven't learned yet is how to find words for it when I most need them. How to tap that reserve when it really matters. I feel like the older I get, the more my creativity atrophies. The more rigid I become, the more hemmed in by artificial boundaries that have gone up over the years.
It's maddening.
The fire is still burning, and the gods know I have enough fuel. I suppose what's lacking is an application for that energy. To strain the metaphor, I have a steam engine, the wheels are spinning, but the energy isn't being used. It only matters when the engine is powering something productive; a mill, drill press, a locomotive, a carousel. Else that energy is simply wasted. How often does the wheel need to practice turning?
At this point, if you're still reading, I'm sure you're wondering why I'm bothering to write this here. The answer is that Second Life is my primary outlet for creativity at the moment. It appeals to me at a technical and analytical level, and at an artistic level as well. Social goes without saying. My best friends in SL are my best friends. That may sound sad, but I'm satisfied with it for now. This is who I am and where I'm at for the moment. So, with that in mind, there is no better place for me to ponder these things.
Except in my head. But it's boring in there.

Odds and ends
A few pictures that I'd not gotten around to posting before now...
Bianca and Akidami's wedding last week.
It was a beautiful desert temple affair.
Me, hiding in the attic, desperately ill with zombie fever.
Me, at the Engineer's Ball. This was taken by Ms. Bookworm Heinrichs.
And....an imposter!
(Someone else in SL that goes by Miss Junie...)
And, for fun, a old picture of me playing with electricity

Open to the public again
Yes, I'm waffling.
I had restricted access to this blog to only friends, and had sent out invites, because I wanted to keep it to myself. Because my time in New Babbage is important to me, and I don't want anything to interfere with that.
After giving it some more thought though, I've decided that I'm not going to hide my thoughts based on controversies that may or may not occur.
So, I apologize for the drama, and now return you to your regularly-scheduled programming.
All Junie, all the time. Just what you've always wanted, right? ;-)

Something amazing
Since I came back to New Babbage in May, folks have been asking if I have any old pictures of the city. Because all of my SL pics from 2006-2007 were on a hard drive that failed, my answer was always "no."
Tonight, I was pawing through a stack of CDRs in an effort to find something.
I didn't find the something I was looking for, but on one disk without a label, I found a folder called "SL."
All of my pics from back when I was on the grid before. From the very first pic I ever took up until I stopped logging in. Not only that, but a lot of my original textures, Photoshop files, clothing templates and even LSL scripts. A veritable treasure trove. (Of outdated stuff, but still...)
I was disappointed that I don't have more pictures of New Babbage, but honestly, it wasn't much to see in those days. ;-) But I do have some pretty good ones, especially a series of aerial snapshots of the sim. I also have a snapshot of myself standing on the parcel map, in the middle of a very empty Babbage Square, after paying for my plot. January 2007. I can't identify all of the builds in the other pics anymore, but I'm hoping to kidnap Edward and Shaunathan sometime and see if we can't piece it all together.
I'm thinking that eventually I'll put all of the good pics into an exhibit.
It was really difficult to find an old pic to include in this post, simply because I'm loving so many of them. But, since I've heard that these kinds of sightings are rare now, I decided to make this one suffice: my husband, Intolerable Ginsburg, and me at a Kurt Vonnegut talk (for The Infinite Mind), with Philip Linden in the row in front of us. (I'm the one with the orange system hair, looking at Phil. My husband was next to me. The LL goons made everyone remove all attachments - only system clothes and hair were allowed!)
